Citizen's Guides: Various Topics
8/18/2009

In keeping with Mayor Matt Ryan's commitment to transparency, the City of Binghamton has created a number of citizen's guides on vital community concerns, including neighborhood safety, municipal finance, and local investment.

Please read on for links to these informational resources, and check back for updates and additions.

RESOURCES ON ROUNDABOUTS

Having received many questions about the Court Street Gateway Project's roundabout feature, the City has posted several resources explaining the benefits of roundabouts, including a new video on the recently built roundabout in Glens Falls, NY. MORE

CITIZEN'S GUIDE TO THE WATER RATE INCREASES

In April 2008, the City raised water rates significantly due to several fixed factors, including soaring costs, declining revenues, a negative balance in the water fund, and unchanged rates from 2002-2006. The City has prepared a "Citizen's Guide" to better explain the reasoning behind the inevitable rate increases and the continued financial challenges we face as a community. MORE

WATER CONSERVATION PROGRAM

By taking just a few simple measures, citizens can conserve water and reduce their costs, often considerably. To aide in this effort, the City of Binghamton offers the Water Conservation Program, which includes both informational resources and conservation reviews by Water-Sewer Department officials. MORE

MARCELLUS SHALE GAS RUSH: A RESOURCE PAGE

The rush to drill the Marcellus Shale has brought a great deal of attention to Broome County. Landowners are scrambling to sign leases, industries have dispatched teams of lobbyists to Albany, and much of the media converage continues to focus on the immediate economic boon to the area. As preserving the long-term social, economic and environmental health of this community is the fundamental priority of this administration, Mayor Ryan is advocating for better understanding and cooperation among officials from the local to the state level on an issue that will have impact for decades to come, and the following webpage seeks to advance that effort. MORE

AFFORDABLE HOUSING RESOURCES

A vital community requires quality affordable housing, and Mayor Ryan has prioritized enhancing affordable housing options through a variety of programs and resources. Read on for more information about the City's affordable housing opportunities, including the First Time Homebuyer Program, the Housing Repair Program, and the Affordable Homes & Heating Guide.
