City Prepares for MLK Day Celebrations

Two MLK Day Celebrations will be held in the City of Binghamton on Monday, January 19th.
From 12:30-4:30 p.m. in City Hall’s 2nd Floor Gallery, an event will honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., commemorate advances in civil rights, and discuss next steps toward realizing Dr. King’s Dream. Activities will include a keynote speech by Horace Mann Elementary School Principal Peter Stewart, performances by local student groups, and a PowerPoint presentation on the Civil Rights Movement.
More than 15 community groups and agencies will set up tables showcasing their educational programming and scholarship opportunities. Food and refreshments will be available, and the event is free and open to the public.
At 6:00 p.m., the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March will proceed from the MLK Promenade to the First Congregational Church, 30 Main St., Binghamton. A service and refreshments will follow the march.
Both events will be hosted by the Broome-Tioga NAACP, the Broome County Urban League, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, and Binghamton University’s Multicultural Resource.
