Fiscal Constraints, Need for Reforms Compel City to Propose Higher Water Rates: Public Comment on Rates to be Held Next Week
[3/20/2008] - The City of Binghamton is proposing to increase water rates up to 40% as a result of mounting fiscal challenges that include escalating water filtration costs, falling consumption of municipal water, and a lack of such rate increases between 2002 and 2006. The proposed rate is similar to those of neighboring municipalities. The City will hold public comment sessions on the rate on three occasions next week: March 24th and 25th, 1-4PM, at the Water Treatment Plant, located at 25 Broome Street; and March 27th, 5:30PM, in City Council Chambers.
