Vital Statistics

Department Overview

THE OFFICE OF VITAL STATISTICS WILL BE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAY MARCH 17, 2010. NORMAL OPERATIONS WILL RESUME ON THE FOLLOWING DAY.

The Vital Statistics Office records and files births and deaths that occur in the City of Binghamton. Once these records are recorded they are kept on file in this office. Birth and death certificates are issued within 3-5 business days.

Because we have records on file dating from the year 1884, persons doing family histories are able to obtain death records of deceased family members.  These records are considered genealogy.  As the records are for genealogical purposes, they are stamped for genealogy purposes only.  These records are not computerized. Therefore we can only search a three year time period if the year of death is not known.

If you need a record of birth or death and no longer live in the area, these records are easily obtained through the mail.

NOTE: The Office is closesd for lunch hours (from 1:00 - 2:00pm) everyday due to limited staffing. Also, due to these staffing shortages, the timeline in which mail will be processed ranges anywhere from three to five days. Thank you for understanding these limitations, and please plan accordingly.
